What is Homeopathy?

What is Homeopathy?

By Doliosis of America, Inc.

HOMEOPATHY is a therapeutic approach based upon an experimentally verified law of pharmacology- THE LAW OF SIMILARS: "A pharmacologically active substance administered to a person in good health triggers a series of symptoms. These can be cured by this same substance when given in micro doses to a patient having these problems" Thus, Ipecac in a large dose causes vomiting; in a small dose diluted and energized according to Hahnemann's method becomes one of the remedies for nausea and vomiting. Opium in a significant dose paralyzes the smooth muscles of the intestine; in a homeopathic dose it becomes one of the elements for treating constipation. 'Similia Similibus Curantur' Likes are cured by the likes, that is, substances which in a strong dose cause symptoms, heal these same symptoms when they are administered in small dose.

Its Origins:

The founder of homeopathy was a physician from Germany named Samuel Hahnemann. He was born in Meissen in 1755. Deeply disturbed in his medical convictions by the weakness of the therapeutic practices of the period, he gave up his medical practice to explore other alternatives and deepen his understanding. Thus in 1790, while translating the 'materia medica' of a Scottish doctor by the name of Cullen his attention was drawn to an article discussing quinine. He found by experimenting on himself that the Chinchona bark would cause toxicological symptoms such as fever attacks and various other disorders similar to those which it cured when used in small doses.

Struck by this coincidence, he continued to experiment and was able to verify that this reaction mode observed with quinine could be repeated with many other substances. It was no longer a coincidence but a valid General Law. The account of his theories and experiments were published in 1810 in "The Organon, or The Art Of Healing."

Experiments with these crude drug substances on healthy subjects are called "provings or pathogenesis." The collection of these "provings" of "drug pictures" constitutes the "HOMEOPATHIC MATERIA MEDICA" used by homeopathic physicians.

Development of the Materia-Medica

The sixty experiments initiated by Hahnemann have since been enormously enlarged, and vast ranges of substances have been studied by his disciples. In the "Homeopathic Materia Medica", the remedies are generally classified in alphabetical order. The entire set of psychic and organic/physical symptoms displayed by healthy but sensitive individuals are meticulously recorded for each remedy.

Homeopathy considers the entire syndrome of the patient's symptoms, hence the expression "therapy for the total man" so often used by homeopathic doctors. For healthy but sensitive individuals, the number of symptoms listed in the pictures of pathogeneses of the remedies is very important. These symptoms generally do not appear all at once either in the patients or in the experimental subjects; some subjects are more sensitive than others and thus have more complete syndromes. However, some of these signs appear very frequently and they are therefore very characteristic. For example, one pale cheek and one ruddy cheek in a baby indicates chamomilla.

Comparison with Allopathy

A homeopathic remedy acts as a stimulant on the reactions of the organism. A small dose of an active product alerts the organism by a kind of signal, perhaps of diencephalic origin, which results in making it as resistant as possible to the toxic aggression. Allopathy, on the other hand, generally acts by a substitutive or inhibitive action. Homeopathy and allopathy are thus not completely incompatible. They are two different approaches to the difficult art of healing, and in certain cases the two treatments can be administered simultaneously.

Homeopathic Consultation

Thanks to the materia medica the homeopathic doctor knows different symptom patterns which represent homeopathic remedies. When a patient comes to him he will, by asking detailed questions, attempt to learn the characteristics of his patient, taking into account not only the details of his disease but also his particular reaction modalities. It is the comparison of the pathogenic symptoms of the materia medica with those displayed by the patient, which will enable the doctor to determine which homeopathic remedy to prescribe. This remedy is called the "SIMILIMUM". In practice the homeopathic doctor does not generally prescribe a single remedy but several, for it is difficult to cover the whole pattern of symptoms displayed by a patient with a single remedy. However, some homeopathic doctors called Kentists try to do this. We will explain here the complete homeopathic prescription practiced by a large part of the homeopathic medical body. In general it includes:

a) The terrain remedy that takes into account profound characteristics, even the patient's diathesis;

b) One or more symptomatic remedies, similima of the disorders caused by the disease;

c) A drainer making it possible to stimulate one or several elimination organs, which facilitates the action of the similimum.

I Preparation

A. Definition

The preparation of homeopathic remedies is outlined in the monographs of the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia:

"Homeopathic preparations are medications obtained by the dynamization/potentization methods as defined in the pharmacopoeia. The preparations are labeled by the Latin name of the drug, substance or compound used, followed by an indication of the dilution or potency.'

For example: Nux Vomica 12X

B. Nature of Homeopathic Remedies

The raw materials are classified as generally belonging to either the animal, vegetable or mineral kingdoms.

Plants are most often gathered in their natural habitat and generally used fresh in the preparation of the mother tinctures.
The mineral kingdom furnishes simple and complex substances, most often natural. These are the metals like "Cuprum", salts like "Calcarea Phosphorica", acids like "Acidum Phosphoricum" and metalloids like "Sulphur".
Less numerous but equally important are the remedies of the animal kingdom: insects like "Apis", the bee; venoms like "Lachesis", secretions or excretions like "Sepia" or cuttlefish ink.

This great variety in origin of raw materials is a result of the basic homeopathic principle, according to which any substance having a proven pharmacological effect upon a healthy individual may become a medication.

Plants and animal substances are used in the preparation of mother tinctures.
Mineral substances are used in the preparation of tritu rations.
Mother tinctures are prepared according to the indications of the Pharmacopoeia. Generally this takes three weeks of hydro-alcoholic maceration after determining the moisture content. With few exceptions, tinctures correspond to one-tenth their weight in dehydrated drug. Tincture presses are used to obtain a maximum extraction yield of the components of the plant after maceration. The macerated plants are then expressed by means of high power hydraulic presses.
Triturations are attenuations in lactose; after three successive one hundred fold dilutions, a 3 CH (1 part per million) is obtained. From this concentration onwards, any substance is considered soluble. Thus, one may prepare a dilution of 4 CH, after another hundred fold dilution of a 3 CH potency.

C. Dilutions - Dynamization

Homeopathic dilutions are prepared according to the Hahnemannian method. If the successive dilutions are by tenths (one part of substance to nine parts alcohol), they are called decimal solutions. They are labeled by the letter X or D, sometimes followed by H (Hahnemann). Thus, a third decimal solution would be specified as 3X or 3D. If the successive dilutions are made to one-hundredth they are called centesimals. They are denoted by the letters C or CH or they carry no notation. The dilution (potency) being given and the specificity of action discovered, the potentized substance should be as pure as possible. No one should "contaminate" the solutions made. Each dilution is energetically agitated: this is the "Dynamization process". These dynamized solutions to one-tenth or one-hundredth, serve as base for preparing homeopathic medications.

II. Galenic forms

All of the galenic forms may be used in homeopathy. Based upon the fact that the sublingual route is the most common, there are dosage forms that are distinctive to homeopathy; Sublingual Drops, Granules, and Globules.

- Drops: Generally presented in amber glasses bottles of 30m1 (1 fI. oz.) or 60m1 (2 fI. oz.). Most often the dosage is ten to twenty drops, directly under the tongue or in a little water, very pure, to be kept in the mouth for a few seconds before swallowing.

- Triturations: These are tablets or medicated powders whose excipient is lactose. Triturations are generally reserved for insoluble substances. The bottles come in different sizes, e.g.: 1oz, 2oz, and 4oz. The tablets or powders are placed under the tongue, and allowed to melt slowly before swallowing.

- Granules are small spheres made from a mixture of saccharose and lactose.

- Globules are also small spheres of the same mixture, saccharose-lactose, but much smaller, around two hundred per gram. They are usually reserved for high dilutions (30X and higher).

Basically, granules and globules are neutral. They are rendered medically efficacious only upon impregnation with potentized dilution.

- Impregnation: This operation makes it possible to transform the neutral globules and granules into "medications." A quality impregnation is achieved by a stable and homogeneous distribution of the homeopathic dilution into the porous surface of its vehicle, the granule or the globule dose.

III. Dosage Rules

The dosage rules correspond to the Law of Similars. The more the similarity between the patient's symptoms and the experimental clinical pattern of the medication, the stronger the prescribed dilutions. Thus:

- In cases where local signs dominate, low and medium strength dilutions are prescribed because the similarity is limited (6X or 12X).

- In subacute conditions accompanied by general signs with aggravation or improvement modalities, the similarity is greater; medium strength dilutions are prescribed (15X to 30X).

- In chronic conditions (the individual reacts with his total psychic and physical constitution) the similarity is complete; high strength dilutions are prescribed (30C and higher).

The "infinitesimal" nature of the doses used in homeopathy has long been the major objection to this discipline. "How can such small doses act when it is known that theoretically there is no matter present beyond Avogadro's number (6.23 x 10-23) which corresponds roughly to a twenty-third decimal!" 24X or 12C. The results obtained by the homeopaths have, however, been in evidence for over 150 years and are often spectacular! The technical progress of recent years in experimental physics makes it possible today to formulate hypotheses on the mode of action of these infinitesimal dilutions, and during the last few years the activity of the latter was scientifically shown to be efficacious. This activity follows from the Law of Similars: the experiments have always been conducted on presensitized subjects. Experiments listed below will illustrate this:

1. Action of Homeopathic Dilutions

· On the biochemical level

- On vegetables

Prof. Netien showed and measured the activity of a homeopathic dilution of copper sulfate on grains of peas previously intoxicated by this substance:

- The control lot was formed of grains cultivated in pure water.

- A second lot of grains were cultivated in a dilution of copper sulfate.

He found an almost normal appearance in the little plants of the second lot, while those of the control lot were atrophied and yellowed.

Dilution favors toxic elimination. This experiment was repeated on other plants with the same results.

· On the Psychic Level

- In animals

Thuja is a great homeopathic medication. It is a polycrest whose pathogenesis contains many mental symptoms. By a scientific battery of tests currently used in pharmacology it is possible to show if a substance acts as a stupefacient. Dr. Tetau chose to study the action of Thuja on rats in massive chemical doses, and then at high dilutions. The study focussed on certain reflexes created in trained animals. It was found that animals that were intoxicated and unbalanced responded after a single dose of Thuja 9 CH. Their symptoms disappeared and they recovered their equilibrium.

2. Effects of High Homeopathic Dilutions

Various experiments on plants and animals have proven both the activity of high dilutions and the validity of the Law of Similars.

- Experiments of seaweed intoxicated by copper sulfate:

Dilutions of copper sulfate in a 30X act upon the growth, respiration and cholorophyllogenesis of seaweed;

- Likewise, laboratory examinations (transaminase rates) have proven the repairing action on hepatic lesions by using phosphorus 30X dilutions on rats previously intoxicated by carbon tetrachloride. Hence the use of phosphorus in the homeopathic treatment of viral hepatitis.

The treatment of a cough in homeopathy will serve as a good example in this regard. In allopathy there are numerous syrups with formulas based on codeine which will quickly relieve a patient's cough. However, there may be toxic effects associated with it, especially on the liver and stomach!

In homeopathy there are more than one hundred effective remedies against the cough. Each of these remedies has specific modalities. The homeopathic doctor should take into account all the intrinsic characteristics of his patient and his/her cough. First it will be determined whether the cough is dry or heavy, productive or not, if it is aggravated upon going into open air, by cold, or when the patient returns to a heated room. Once a symptom picture is discovered, the Homeopathic doctor will match the remedy with the symptoms. For example the dry cough of Rumex is triggered by the slightest contact with fresh air. Rumex patients always walk with a scarf covering their nose and mouth. A Pulsatilla patient has a heavy cough during the day and a dry one at night. Natrum Sulfuricum is characterized by a very heavy cough aggravated by humidity. Spongia is the remedy for violent coughs which reminds one of the sound a saw makes going through a plank; improved by drinking hot liquid.

Fortunately, some complex homeopathic formulas, when associated with remedies with similar therapeutic potential, show positive results in common cases. For example, Drosera compound formula effectively combats annoying coughing fits. Likewise, drainage relieves various physiological miseries.

When organs of elimination such as the kidneys or the liver are insufficient or when a gland or tissue system is deficient, it is possible to stimulate these organs by means of medications when the organic tropism or physiological affinities are known. This technique is referred to as "DRAINAGE". This term expresses the dynamics of this adjunctive therapy, which consists of stimulating one or more organs with the elimination function. Some homeopathic schools are very faithful to this theory of drainage. Others affirm that when the homeopathic remedy is perfectly selected according to the law of similars, it alone performs the function of drainer and curative agent. In current practice, drainage renders a very great service. There are several classifications of drainage remedies. The simplest and most common simply refers to the affinities which certain medications have for this or that organ. Thus, the kidneys are stimulated by Berberis Vulgeris and Solidago Virga; the liver by Chelidonium, Taraxacum and Carduus Marianus; the skin by Fumaria and Saponaria. Other medications are intended to tone the veins, like Aesculus, Hamamelis, Hydrastis; or the mucous glands of the rhinopharynx like Allium Cepa, Euphrasia and Sabadilla. The examples go on and on. There is recently another method of drainage using the second decimal potencies of vegetable glycerin macerates prepared either from fresh buds of certain trees or from vegetable tissues in the process of growing and dividing. This is called Gemmotherapy. Examples of drainage by vegetable buds are abundant. Thus, Corylus Avellana (hazel tree) and the young shoots of Rosemarinus (rosemary) stimulate the liver cells. The buds of Fagus Silvatica (beech tree) increase the renal secretions. The buds of Ficus Carica (fig tree) normalize the secretion of the gastric juice and are indicated in gastritis. All of these gemmotherapy remedies are currently prescribed by doctors in a first decimal (1 DH) glycerine macerate at a dose of fifty to seventy-five drops a day.

A second therapeutic method is comparable to drainage; this is Diluted and Energized Organotherapy. Organotherapy or the use of Sarcodes is the therapy which acts on the various glands and tissues of the human body to restore function. It works by the administration of glandular and tissue extracts which act directly upon the malfunctioning gland or tissue by stimulating or draining it. Organo therapy remedies are most often prescribed in the form of sublingual drops. Thus, to stimulate a failing liver or bile vessel, a sarcode of Liver 8X or Bilinum 8X is used. Kidney 8X will increase the diuresis. Mucous of Colon 8X is an excellent constipation remedy.

Homeopathic Dilutions have an Experimentally Demonstatable Activity.

Research of Professors Lapp and Wurmser.

Guinea pigs injected with 1000 gamma units of arsenic will excrete (urine-faeces) approximately 35% of the administered dose in about 90 hours. After this, no more arsenic traces can be found in the urine. An injection of Arsenicum Album in a 14X (7CH) dilution 3 weeks later results in a further elimination of 39% of the trapped Arsenic. Distilled water injections used as controls triggered no such elimination.

The same experiments conducted by Professor Cier, this time on the vestibulary chromaxia of pigeons, confirmed that Arsenicum Album in a 30X potency (15CH) is equally active.

Research of J. and M. Tetau

They studied the psychopharmacology of thuya. Rats are trained to find their way through a maze (Mercier's Test). The administration of substantial doses of Thuya deconditions these rats, resulting in a loss of equilibrium. An injection of Thuya 18X re-establishes their conditioned reflex.

Attempt at Experimental Demonstration of the Law of Similars.

Work of Bildet, Guere, Saurel, Aubin, Demarque, and Quilichini.

There is a similarity between intoxication by carbon tetrachloride and phosphorus. Both cause hepatitis having certain characteristics. When rats having received carbon tetrachloride (ccl 4) and showing symptoms of toxic hepatitis are injected with homeopathic dilutions of Phosphorus at 14X and 30X, it is found that this diluted and energized phosphorus accelerates the regression of the hepatic lesion. 14X has been shown to be more active on the transaminase rates, whereas 30X is more active on the hepatic tissue lesion involved in the histology.

This, then, is an overview of Homeopathy. We have chosen to be succinct while trying to be clear. As Kent, an eminent homeopath of the last century, wrote in the descriptive language of his time, "It is with the immovable principles as a guide, with the homeopathic remedy judiciously selected as a means, that the doctor will reestablish the harmony of conscience and balance of the functions disturbed in the sick person."

A Summary of the Major Points of Homeopathy

Homeopathy is based on a simple yet unexpected Law of Nature. The effects of this Law of Similars" can be demonstrated repeatedly. Hence Homeopathy is scientific in its essence and practice.

The First Fundamental of Homeopathy states - that which can cause symptoms in the healthy can cure the same symptoms in the sick. ( The Law of Similars).

The Second Fundamental of Homeopathy states- lasting health is produced only when the whole disease state is cured in the "reverse order" of its development.

Homeopathy cures what can be cured at least as well as any other system of healing now known to the world.

Homeopathy cures quickly, easily, and without danger to the patient. It uses incredibly minute and specially prepared doses as remedies. These remedies have absolutely no danger of poisoning or causing damage, even with the youngest of patients or with the largest of overdoses.

Homeopathy can only cure. It does not produce any side effects of permanent bad reactions. Any 'reactions' are superficial and very temporary. It cannot 'cure' by permanently suppressing single symptoms to the detriment of the health as a whole, as some other methods do.

Homeopathy always improves the general health and well being of a patient, even if the ailment is specific in nature.

Homeopathy always treats each individual patient as a whole human being and does not limit itself to treating only the named disease.

Homeopathy overcomes the bad effects of other methods of treatment such as vaccinations, antibiotics, radiation, steroids, hormones and any general poisoning or harm to the system.

Homeopathy, skillfully used, routinely cures conditions diagnosed as incurable by other methods of treatment, including orthodox medicine. This cure is accomplished without the danger or poisoning or radical surgery, (bear in mind that almost all patients come to Homeopathy having failed to find a cure anywhere else).

In those few cases where Homeopathy is too late and complete recovery cannot be accomplished, the relief of pain, the reduction of symptoms, and the maintenance of both awareness and dignity can seem almost miraculous.

Under Homeopathic treatment far and fewer patients require surgical operations. With early enough treatment Homeopathy could make unnecessary almost ALL forms of dangerous, toxic or potentially deadly treatments. This bears thinking about.

Good Homeopathic prescribing can often cure many of the various ailments which most people take for granted or have been told to put up with, such as hayfever, asthma, constipation, migraine, eczema, menstrual problems, problems during child birth, chronic exhaustion, etc., etc.

Homeopathy benefits the young as the tendency to illness can then be most easily removed or abated. The result is a general good health and zest for living enjoyed over a long and productive life. Homeopathy is wonderful when prescribed appropriately before and during pregnancy, when the result is a much easier childbirth and a healthier and more vigorous baby.

Homeopathy makes it easy to avoid or drastically reduce the possibility of developing any epidemic diseases. This includes things such as Influenza as well as Cholera, Typhoid, etc.

Homeopathy makes unnecessary the often-dangerous practice of vaccination and immunization. This is especially the case in children and babies where any subtle damage to the brain or nervous or immune system from the inoculations cannot be quickly seen. In these circumstances the child just does not develop to their full capacity as is her/his birthright, and what has been lost will never be known. Even here good Homeopathic prescribing can restore much of what has been 'lost'.

Homeopathic remedies can be used in the home for mild family health problems easily with no harm at all. A Homeopathic medicine chest contains nothing that is dangerous.

Homeopathy is very quick to cure and sustain life in dangerous and emergency situations such as severe bleeding, shock, serious health injury, head injuries, etc., etc. This includes severe emotional injuries such as bereavement. If a few simple Homeopathic remedies were easily available and frequently used then thousands and perhaps millions of lives annually world-wide would be saved from unnecessary death or disablement.

Homeopathy can do more to eradicate or overcome the 'hereditary' diseases than any other form of treatment. This includes such things as Down's Syndrome, Muscular Dystrophy, Cystic Fibrosis, etc. The 'hereditary' predisposition can also be cured so future children & children's children avoid the problem.

A full orthodox medical training is designed to enable its practitioners to 'safely use' toxic and otherwise dangerous drugs and procedures. In its full extent it is not a basic treatment for the good practice of Homeopathy, which uses harmless remedies prescribed to release the body's enormous internal power of intelligent self-healing.

Good Homeopathy can achieve what seems impossible to those used in other systems of healing. To be appreciated Homeopathy needs to be explored without resistance and experienced without prejudice.
